Call for entries to the fourth edition of DesignACE
Barry-Wehmiller International Resources (BWIR), in partnership with SolidWorks Inc, is inviting applications for its fourth edition of DesignACE 2012 contest, the largest annual engineering design contest.
This contest is an opportunity to nurture your talent and get cracking in the engineering design domain. The contest covers more than 500 colleges across South India — Tamil Nadu, Pondicherry, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Kerala.
The theme for this year’s edition is ‘Green Sustainability’. All contestants must submit their innovative design with a brief write-up for the shortlisting procedure on or before August 24, 2012. Solidworks Inc is the technical partner for the contest. Students who register for the contest will be provided the software kits they need for the modelling. An eminent jury from the engineering design industry will participate this season.
Now in its fourth year in a row, DesignACE is an annual property of BWIR that was conceptualised internally to give engineering students an opportunity to showcase their imagination and passion into action through design. There is much to be won and cherished through this contest. Attractive cash prizes and rewards await not only the best designs but also the colleges who actively encourage a large student participation.
Important dates
- Last date for submission of the innovative design is August 24, 2012
- Announcement of the shortlisted candidates for the pre-finals will take place on September 7, 2012
- Pre-finals will be conducted on September 21, 2012
- Design ACE 2012 finals will take place on September 22, 2012
The contest is open to a team of two students from the same college. The teams could be from any engineering college across South India —Tamil Nadu / Kerala / Andhra Pradesh / Karnataka. Students pursuing any engineering degree can apply. Here’s the eligibility list and rules of the contest:
- All teams must be registered online at www.bwir-designace.com.
- Students must create an innovative mechanical design using SolidWorks in conformance with the theme for this year — sustainability with a short write-up. It can either be an improvement from an existing product or a brand new product or a machine.
- Each design will be judged based on broad use of concept, innovation, CAD usage, aesthetic appeal and usage of sustainability concepts. Additional importance will be given to designs with simulation and the use of green manufacturing concepts
- Each team should send us one innovative design of your own for the initial short listing.
The following items have to reach Barry-Wehmiller International Resources (BWIR) on or before August 31, 2012. The students can either courier the complete package or can deliver the package in person at the BWIR office.
- Model of the Innovative Design using SolidWorks — written on a CD/DVD.
- Drawings using SolidWorks.
- A brief write-up on the concept/mechanism behind the design, including:
- An explanation of the design calculations
- Simulation files
- A note on sustainability concepts adopted, if any
Shortlist and further process
Fifty teams will be shortlisted for the second round which will be conducted at BWIR office premises in Chennai on September 21, 2012. The exact venue and timings for the second round will be communicated to the shortlisted teams through e-mail and the list will also be published on the website on September 12, 2012.
In the second round, each shortlisted team would need to solve a design problem provided by BWIR. BWIR will then select eight teams for the final round and finalists would present the solution of the design problem and their innovative design in front of the jury for about 15 minutes on September 22, 2012. The winners will be selected by the jury and prize distribution will be held on the same day.
