Macquarie University in Sydney has launched an industry-focused engineering course for the academic year 2013. This undergraduate degree will focus on Mechanical Engineering.
Macquarie has a longstanding reputation of offering some of the best engineering programmes, especially  Electronic Engineering. A feather in their cap is the university’s engineering researchers’ contribution to develop and commercialise the ‘WLAN technology’ breakthrough that underpins today’s high-speed wi-fi.
Macquarie has strong industry partnerships with companies such as BAE Systems, Cochlear and Honeywell that are located close to the university, in one of Australia’s leading high-technology precincts.
Industry demand
Executive Dean of Science, Professor Stephen Thurgate, says that in 2012, student demand for Macquarie’s engineering degrees continued to grow, in particular the Bachelor of Engineering (41 per cent increase in enrolments) and Bachelor of Engineering/Bachelor of Business Administration double degree (100 per cent increase).
“The expansion of the engineering programme is a direct response to the increase in demand by industry as well as students,” professor Thurgate says.

Admissions to the Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering were opened on June 1, 2012, with forms being available online. The degree programme will commence from 2013 as a new major in the Bachelor of Engineering (Mechanical Engineering), with a focus on micro-mechanical devices. This major will equip students for a career in mechanical engineering, manufacturing or industrial design, and help them develop creative and practical solutions for the benefit of society. Key features of the degree include:
*The opportunity to interact with academics in a variety of ground-breaking areas from life sciences to nanofabrication
*A focus on industry experience
*The ability to combine the degree with others such as the Bachelor’s of Science, Arts, Business Administration or Commerce by adding just one more year of study. All students graduating from a science stream with an ATR score of 5 and above (75 per cent and above for ISC/CBSE boards) with an excellent knowledge of mathematics may apply. Candidates must also have a score of 6.5 overall in the IELT.
