Study abroad has become a dream and passion for many Indian students because of a better life and career opportunities.

Year on year the number of Indian students is heading abroad for higher education is growing rapidly. According to the latest Indian students mobility report by MM Advisory Services in New Delhi, the majority of the students are considering study at UK, United States, Australia, Canada, New Zealand and Germany.


USA, UK, Australia, China, Italy and Singapore are offering various free scholarships and fellowship programs for students.

Government of India scholarships for students to study abroad


Central Sector Scheme of National Overseas Scholarship (SC/ST/OBC)

 

The Scheme provides financial help to the finally selected candidates for pursuing Master level courses and Ph.D abroad in the accredited Institutions/University by an authorized body of that country in the following specified fields of study.


Engineering and Management
Pure Sciences & Applied Sciences
Agricultural Sciences and Medicine
Commerce, Accounting & Finance and
Humanities, Social Science & Fine Arts

 

Every year, One Hundred awards are available under the scheme (subject to availability of funds) and 30% of the awards for each year shall be earmarked for women candidates.

 

 

Qualification: The qualification for the above programs.

For Ph.D: The candidate must have 55% marks or equivalent grade in relevant Masters' Degree.

For Masters' Degree: The candidate must have 55% marks or equivalent grade in relevant Bachelors'

Age limit: Below 35 (Thirty Five) years,

Income ceiling: The total family income from all sources of the employed candidate or his/her parents/guardians, shall not exceed Rs.6,00,000 (Rs. Six lakhs per annum), (excluding such allowances as are not treated as part of total income, for the purpose of income tax) as certified by the employer.


Financial assistance


1. The annual maintenance allowance of US Dollars 15400/- (Fifteen Thousand four hundred) has been prescribed for all levels of courses covered under the Scheme for USA and other countries except the UK.

2. For the UK, the annual maintenance allowance of 9900/- (Nine Thousand nine hundred) Great Britain Pound (GBP) has been prescribed.

Besides the above, there is provision for Contingency allowance, incidental journey allowance, poll tax, Visa fee, fees and medical insurance premium, air passage will also be provided.


Duration

The prescribed financial assistance is provided up to completion of the course/research or the following period, whichever is earlier

Ph.D. -- 04 years (Four years)

Master Degree -- 03 years (Three years)

 

2. US scholarships - Fulbright Foreign Student Program


The Fulbright Foreign Student Program is administered by binational Fulbright Commissions/Foundations or U.S. Embassies. All Foreign Student Program applications are processed by these offices.


The Fulbright Foreign Student Program enables graduate students, young professionals and artists from abroad to study and conduct research in the United States.


Program eligibility and selection procedures are different from country to country.


The Fulbright Foreign Student Program operates in more than 155 countries worldwide. Approximately 4,000 foreign students receive Fulbright scholarships each year.


Fulbright Foreign Language Teaching Assistant (FLTA)


The Fulbright FLTA Program is sponsored by the United States Department of State Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs (ECA)


The Fulbright FLTA Program is designed to develop Americans' knowledge of foreign cultures and languages by supporting teaching assistantships in over 30 languages at hundreds of U.S. institutions of higher education.
Fulbright FLTAs apply to the program through the Fulbright Commission/Foundation or U.S. Embassy in their home countries.

The Role of the U.S. Host Institutions


U.S. host institutions devise the FLTAs’ assistanceships in the United States. The needs of each host institution differ. Thus, each FLTA's program is tailored to the needs of the institution and qualifications of the selected TA


The FLTA's Program


Will be up to 20 hours per week in various educational activities designated by the Supervisor.

Will include the opportunity to take two courses per semester on an audit or credit basis, that is beneficial to their teaching career, as determined in consultation with the Supervisor.

One course taken during the year must be in U.S. studies.

The Role of the FLTA


FLTAs spend one academic year at a U.S. college or university. They:


Provide a youthful, up-to-date component to foreign language classes.

Enhance the teaching by U.S. professors or teach under their supervision.

Make studying foreign languages in the United States more meaningful and real.

Share their culture and values outside of the classroom by joining clubs and becoming involved in the community.

Engage in academic study that will enrich their postgraduate studies and enhance their professional development.

Return home with a high proficiency in English.

Can speak first-hand about the United States, its culture and its people.

 


FLTA Program Funding


The U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs (ECA) provides all Fulbright FLTA grant recipients with Fulbright enrichment activities and a health benefit plan.


U.S. Host Institution Cost-Share


All colleges and universities requesting a Fulbright FLTA must provide tuition and fees waiver(s) for two courses per semester or (one per quarter). When possible, maximum cost-share (i.e. a combination of the suggested awards below) should be included in applications.


Less Commonly Taught Languages (LCTL) and LCTL Northern Europe IIE does not exclude institutions requesting assistance in a less commonly taught language based on potential cost-share. For institutions able to offer cost-share, recommended awards include:


An in-kind contribution of free housing or meal plan, OR
$400 - $600 per month to be used towards housing, food and other costs

Traditional Languages


Host institutions requesting assistance for traditional languages should also include an award for the FLTA’s program expenses. Acceptable awards include:


A financial award great enough to cover room, board and daily living expenses or
Free room and board and a monthly stipend between $400-$600

3. UK scholarship for students to study abroad


The Commonwealth Scholarship Commission in the UK (CSC) awards over 900 scholarships and fellowships for postgraduate study and professional development to Commonwealth citizens each year.


The CSC aims to contribute to the UK’s international development aims and wider overseas interests, support excellence in UK higher education, and sustain the principles of the Commonwealth. Candidates are selected on the basis of merit and their potential to contribute to the needs of their home countries.

2. Commonwealth Split-site (PhD) Scholarships for PhD candidates to spend up to 12 months in the UK as part of their doctoral studies.

7. Commonwealth Professional Fellowships for mid-career professionals from developing countries to spend time at a UK organisation

8. Commonwealth Medical Fellowships for mid-career medical staff from developing countries to enhance their clinical skills.

 

4. Australian Scholarships for students to study abroad


Australia Awards Scholarships are long term development awards administered by the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade.


The study and research opportunities provided by Australia Awards Scholarships develop skills and knowledge of individuals to drive change and contribute to the development outcomes of their own country.


Benefits:


The Awards are offered for the minimum period necessary for the individual to complete the academic program specified by the Australian higher education institution, including any preparatory training with the following benefits.

The types of courses available for study under a Scholarship will depend on the applicant’s home country government and/or DFATpolicy. Australia Awards


Scholarships are available for the following courses:

i. Vocational Education and Training (VET) courses

ii. Bachelor degree (undergraduate) courses

iii. Master degree courses

iv. Doctorate degree (PhD) programs

5. Singapore scholarships for students to study abroad

2. Singapore scholarships for Graduate studies - Singapore International Graduate Award (SINGA)


Singapore International Graduate Award (SINGA) awarded to the  international students to pursue PhD education in Singapore.


Under SINGA you can pursue PhD at an A*STAR Research Institute or Nanyang Technological University (NTU), National University of Singapore (NUS) and Singapore University of Technology and Design (SUTD)


Research areas under the PhD Programme fall broadly under two categories:


1. Biomedical Sciences and

2. Physical Science and Engineering.

Eligibility


It is open to all international graduates who have good reports from academic referees and good skills in written and spoken English.


It may have additional selection criteria based on prevailing scholarship policies.

The award provides support for up to 4 years of PhD studies.

The award provides support for up to 4 years of PhD studies including:


Tuition fees

Monthly stipend of S$2,000, which will be increased to S$2,500 after the passing of the Qualifying Examination

One-time airfare grant of up to S$1,500

One-time settling-in allowance of S$1,000
